Changing seasons (environmental shifts between hot-cold,
wet-dry) challenge mucus membranes. For some folks, such a
change goes unnoticed. But for many, seasonal changes lead to
colds and allergy symptoms, or chronic sinus conditions
(congestion, drainage, infection). These symptoms are driven by
the release of histamine in the body. Histamine is a stress
hormone released in the body in response to acute injury,
trauma, or inflammation. It raises blood pressure and
cholesterol, causes irritability, agitation, restlessness, and
affects sleep through shorter and shallower sleep cycles.
Typical anti-histamine preparations, such as Claritin or
Zyrtec, work by blocking the histamine receptors, thereby
reducing the symptoms (congestion, drainage, sneezing) but not
eliminating the cause --- histamine. Solution? QUERCETIN.
QUERCETIN is one of nature’s coloring agents;
giving color to most yellow-orange fruits, vegetables and
flowers. It is considered a bioflavinoid, having the highest
antioxidant effect of any flavinoids, and acts as a free radical
scavenger. Best know for its effectiveness in treating asthma
and allergies, Quercetin also acts as an antiviral
and anti-inflammatory agent. It inhibits the release of
histamine from mast cells, blocking the production of
cyclo-oxygenase and leukotrienes. Quercetin has
healing properties that medications and antihistamines lack; it
stimulates structural and cellular repair of collagen, elastin,
and membranes. This helps strengthen all mucus membranes,
including lungs, sinuses and respiratory system. Quercetin
triggers true regeneration of tissues so that over time
allergies and respiratory symptoms decrease in severity and
frequency.
Foods with highest levels of quercetininclude
onions, apples, red wine, teas, green teas, spices, beans, and
green leafy vegetables. Better yet, try the capsules, powder, or
gummy-bears!
Adult Dosing: 500- 1000.mg 2-4 times daily. For chronic
allergy, pain, inflammation, asthma, or sinusitis: 1000 -
6,000.mg daily in divided doses. Take with lots of water; stay
hydrated so that the quercetin can get to the
target tissues.
Children (ages 3+) Dosing: 25.mg –250.mg 2-4 times daily.
