There are numerous books that have been written on the topic of alternative care. Many deal with herbalism, homeopathy, chiropractic medicine, aromatherapy, ayurvedic medicine, etc. Here is a short list of some good reference materials and also books that could provide in depth information on the individual practices of alternative medicine.

Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide, compiled by Burton Goldberg Group - This is an excellent reference book to both patients and healthcare providers that gives information on 43 different alternative therapies from acupuncture to yoga. In each of these sections is an explanation of the principles of the alternative therapy, how it works, listed typical treatments and addresses and phone numbers of associations that could provide help in finding qualified practitioners or other information. The rest of the book lists health conditions, such as arthritis or gastrointestinal disorders, and gives information on types, causes, and treatments using various alternative medicine therapies. The therapies listed are broken down into two categories: self-care and professional care. The second one states that the therapy should only be provided by a qualified health professional. This reference lists organizations that could guide the patient to a qualified practitioner in their area.
